Welcome to Butler-Tarkington—the friendly, historic neighborhood that surrounds the Butler campus.

The neighborhood name of Butler-Tarkington comes from both Butler University & Pulitzer Prize Winning Novelist, Booth Tarkington. This is a great neighborhood to live in as a "college town" with Butler University consistently being rated the #1 University in the Midwest. The campus is a great place to walk and enjoy the outdoors, as well as visit Hinkle Fieldhouse for Butler Basketball and Clowes Memorial Hall for all of the theatric and musical performances put on at the university. Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium is also on campus, where you can view the constellations on weekend evenings.

The beautiful Newfields Art Museum has over 100 acres of public gardens and walking trails. Also, Crown Hill National Cemetery is close by for those who enjoy learning about civil war history or just want beautiful landscapes to walk through. Holcomb Gardens features a vast and elegant grass mall and sits adjacent to the Central Canal Towpath, which follows the White River’s Central Canal north into Broad Ripple and south into downtown Indy.

Butler-Tarkington is a good place to live if you can't drive. It's a very easy neighborhood to walk and bike in, and there are two Indy-Go bus lines that run through the community with nearby access to the Rapid Transit Red Line, as well.

There's a vareity of local businesses in the neighborhood, including hair salons, convenience stores, sandwich shops, breweries, dog groomers, and more. Some of the neighborhood favorites include The Fresh Market, Chatham Tap, Hoagies & Hops, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Kincaid’s Meat Market, Byrne’s Pizza, Kids Ink Bookstore, and the renowned Illinois Street Food Emporium

Tarkington Park features an expansive playground, a massive splash pad, and basketball courts, as well as several tennis courts. Tea’s Me Café is also located on the park grounds. Black Park is the most natural green space that is ideal for bird watching with great trees. Ramsey Park and Alice Park also provide more available outdoor spaces. Crown Hill Cemetery is renowned for its stunning landscapes, and Hoosiers often travel there to see the view of downtown from the top of the “Crown.” The cemetery hosts historical tours and holiday celebrations.

James Whitcomb Riley Elementary and North Central High School are located in the neighborhood.
